The Golden Rule is Common to All Religions

Golden Rule

The Saturday Evening Post: cover, April 1, 1961 (This Sunday will be the 57th anniversary of the Golden Rule).

A group of people of different religions, races and ethnicity served as the backdrop for the inscription “Do Unto Other As You Would Have Them Do Unto You.” Rockwell was a compassionate man, and this simple phrase reflected his philosophy.
“I’d been reading up on comparative religion. The thing is that all major […]

Honoring “The Golden Rule”

Our acclaimed exhibition, "We The Peoples: Norman Rockwell’s United Nations" officially closed on September 15, yet the United Nations Headquarters in New York continues to experience unique “Norman Rockwell” moments. This past Friday, September 25, the United Nations welcomed His Holiness Pope Francis, during his first-ever visit to the United States. Prior to addressing the UN’s General Assembly, Pope Francis took time out to admire Norman Rockwell’s Golden Rule, which remains on temporary loan to the UN from the Museum’s collection. Rockwell’s painting, in fact, served as the perfect backdrop for the pontiff’s visit, where he had referenced the concept of “the golden rule” during his historic address to Congress just the day before. Pope Francis can be seen signing the UN’s guestbook in the same room where Rockwell’s welcoming artwork is currently displayed.

Norman Rockwell’s “Golden Rule”

In preparing to paint this 1961 Saturday Evening Post cover, Norman Rockwell noted that many countries, cultures, and religions incorporate some version of the Golden Rule into their belief systems. “Do Unto Others as You Would Have Them Do Unto You” is a simple but universal phrase that reflected Rockwell’s personal philosophy.

ONLINE: LIVE MULTIMEDIA PERFORMANCE Finding Home: WE ARE STORIES

This production, directed by high school senior Eliza Keenan, is based on four personal visual immigration stories created by artists David Macaulay, Frances Jetter, James McMullan and Yuyi Morales and featured in the current exhibition Finding Home: Four Artists’ Stories. These stories are woven with Berkshire County Immigrant Stories collected over the last six months in Berkshire County, MA to connect themes from the exhibition with real stories from the community surrounding the Museum. To set the stage, the show begins with a video portrait of Norman Rockwell’s process for creating the painting, the Golden Rule. The artist and Berkshire Immigrant Stories follow, and the show concludes with an original song by student Fiora Laina.

The “Contemporary” Racial Conscience and Sensitivity of Norman Rockwell

The 1960s would prove to be the opening of the floodgates of Rockwell’s love and concern for all humanity. After leaving the Post in 1963 he did one of his most famous and important paintings, “The Problem We All Live With”. This symbolized a moment in the life of Ruby Bridges at six years old being escorted by U.S. Marshalls to help end segregation in a school in the South. But it was also a depiction of a moment in the state of America that still resonates to this very day and moment.

We Will Never Forget

The end of the summer has brought much cause for reflection here at Norman Rockwell Museum— important milestones, the passing of former colleagues and friends, and devastating storms, which have forced our neighbors to rebuild and start again. We would be remiss in not also reflecting on the tragic events that took place ten years ago, on September 11, 2001. A decade later our nation still struggles to find peace and solace from the events that unfolded on that otherwise clear, late summer day.

It's a moment etched in time — of unity, of a movement to end systemic racism toward African Americans — a Black Lives Matter protest.
