Norman Rockwell’s “Golden Rule”

In preparing to paint this 1961 Saturday Evening Post cover, Norman Rockwell noted that many countries, cultures, and religions incorporate some version of the Golden Rule into their belief systems. “Do Unto Others as You Would Have Them Do Unto You” is a simple but universal phrase that reflected Rockwell’s personal philosophy.

The Golden Rule is Common to All Religions

Golden Rule

The Saturday Evening Post: cover, April 1, 1961 (This Sunday will be the 57th anniversary of the Golden Rule).

A group of people of different religions, races and ethnicity served as the backdrop for the inscription “Do Unto Other As You Would Have Them Do Unto You.” Rockwell was a compassionate man, and this simple phrase reflected his philosophy.

What Would Rockwell Say?

What Would Rockwell Say?

And by say, I mean paint.

With all of the rancor, discord, and divisiveness that is now so pervasive, there are a myriad of topics to choose from.  Rockwell was not political.  He painted presidents, both Republican and Democratic, but if you asked him, he likely would not say whom he voted for.  However, Rockwell did have opinions.  Most admirers of his work really did not […]

We Will Never Forget

The end of the summer has brought much cause for reflection here at Norman Rockwell Museum— important milestones, the passing of former colleagues and friends, and devastating storms, which have forced our neighbors to rebuild and start again. We would be remiss in not also reflecting on the tragic events that took place ten years ago, on September 11, 2001. A decade later our nation still struggles to find peace and solace from the events that unfolded on that otherwise clear, late summer day.
