Introduction to The Pinkney Exhibition Catalogue from Chief Curator Stephanie Plunkett

Witness: The Art of Jerry Pinkney

“I’ve found it interesting to trace how the chapters of my life have knitted themselves into my art.”
—Jerry Pinkney

In its purest sense, the act of artistic creation is a bit like looking at oneself in the mirror and leaving one’s reflection behind. All that an artist is, all that he believes, and the many things that he has witnessed in his time, become one with his art.
Across his fifty year […]

Imprinted: Illustrating Race

Opening June 11, 2022, Imprinted: Illustrating Race examines the role of published images in shaping attitudes toward race and culture. More than 100 works of art and artifacts of widely circulated illustrated imagery will be on view, produced from the late eighteenth century to today, which have an impact on public perception about race in the United States. The exhibition will explore stereotypical racial representations that have been imprinted upon us through the mass publication of images. It culminates with the creative accomplishments of contemporary artists and publishers who have shifted the cultural narrative through the creation of positive, inclusive imagery emphasizing full agency and equity for all.

REVIEW: Representation matters: Race and perception are center stage in ‘Imprinted: Illustrating Race’ at the Norman Rockwell Museum

STOCKBRIDGE — The advertisement seems harmless. A cherub faced toddler, rosy-cheeks, a paper hat upon his head and bayonet slung over his shoulder gazes up lovingly at a chef clad all in white save for his red bow tie. The chef, with a serving tray topped with a piping-hot bowl of porridge, stares out at the viewer — an amiable grin on his face.
