Norman Rockwell Museum has added two highly experienced museum professionals to its curatorial team. Seth Fogelman, formerly the Senior Exhibitions Manager and Registrar at the Whitney Museum of American Art, joins the Museum as Chief of Curatorial Affairs. Jane Dini, PhD, most recently the Andrew W. Mellon Senior Curator, American Art, at the Brooklyn Museum, assumes the role of Curator of Exhibitions.

Stockbridge, Mass.—February 22, 2024—Norman Rockwell Museum announces the launch of Imagining Freedom, an interactive virtual exhibition that explores the history, artistic interpretations, and contemporary resonance of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s concept of four basic human rights, the Four Freedoms. The exhibition highlights the important role of Norman Rockwell and other artists in advancing and communicating these ideals, envisioned as core human rights for all people. The launch of this new virtual exhibition coincides with the 80th anniversary of the publication of Norman Rockwell’s Four Freedoms portrayals in The Saturday Evening Post.

Stockbridge, Mass.—January 17, 2024—Norman Rockwell Museum presents captivating artwork with enigmatic and magical appeal in its new exhibition, Mystery and Wonder: Highlights from the Illustration Collection. Opening March 2 and running through June 16, this exhibition features selected images from Norman Rockwell Museum’s Permanent Collection, which now holds almost 25,000 artworks created by more than 300 illustrators.

January 16, 2024—Norman Rockwell Museum is pleased to highlight recent national coverage of Leo Lionni: Storyteller, Artist, Designer, the 184-page volume published by Abbeville Press that accompanies the Museum’s first major American retrospective of the artist. Rockwell’s legacy endures in Stockbridge, where the artist remains one of the community’s “most beloved residents,” notes producer and program host Lindsay Paris.

Stockbridge, Mass.—November 30, 2023—Norman Rockwell Museum today announced three appointments to refreshed Museum leadership positions. Hilary Dunne Ferrone has assumed the role of Chief Philanthropy Officer to lead Norman Rockwell Museum’s annual fundraising campaign and to align its fundraising programs with the Museum’s strategic initiatives and overall strategic growth plan. Kathryn Potts has been named Chief Learning and Engagement Officer, responsible for developing engaging learning content and programming to inspire the Museum’s visitors, community members, and digital audiences. Potts will oversee the Museum Guides and build on the Museum’s long tradition of excellent public education and interpretive work. Tiffani Silverman joins the Museum as its new Director of People and Culture to develop strategic human resources initiatives and programs and foster and deepen a culture of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.

A wise man once told me that an artist has at least three acts in their creative lives. The inaugural “Session” will feature eight process works by Norman Rockwell from the Norman Rockwell Archives that went into the making of the artist’s self-reflective painting Waiting for the Art Editor (1970).

STOCKBRIDGE, MA—September 27, 2023—Norman Rockwell Museum is honoring baseball great Brooks Robinson, who died yesterday, by putting Rockwell’s iconic painting of the celebrated third baseman on display. Rockwell painted the tribute to Robinson in 1971 as an advertising commission for A-T-O, Inc.’s sporting goods division, Rawlings Sporting Goods.

STOCKBRIDGE, MA, September 7, 2023—Norman Rockwell Museum presents the first major American retrospective of artist Leo Lionni, a groundbreaking modernist graphic designer and magazine art director who gained worldwide popularity as the writer and illustrator of nearly 40 children’s books in as many years. NORMAN ROCKWELL MUSEUM ANNOUNCES FALL/WINTER EXHIBITION OPENING NOVEMBER 12 ELOISE AND MORE: THE LIFE AND ART OF HILARY KNIGHT

Norman Rockwell Museum is saddened to share news from the Steig family, that Jeanne Steig has died, peacefully, in her sleep, during the early morning hours of July 26, 2022, at the age of 92. Author, artist, and donor, Jeanne Steig was a dear friend to the Museum; and leaves a legacy of art to be enjoyed by future generations thanks to her incredible contribution of a collection of over 6,000 original artworks works by her husband, the legendary illustrator, author, and cartoonist William Steig.

If a visitor to Stockbridge, Mass., could have time-traveled between the studios of illustrator Norman Rockwell and (a few decades earlier) the sculptor Daniel Chester French, they might have noticed the artists using an identical object: a life mask of the 16th American president.

I’ve been enticed and excited by Bascove’s imagery ever since I first laid eyes on her signature book covers and jackets designed for publishers throughout the 1970s and 80s. Her emotionally-charged woodcuts, pen and brush drawings and hand-crafted gothic lettering grabbed my senses and intensified my interest. The books with her peerless illuminations of the essence author’s work were often put face-out on the shelves of my favorite bookselling haunts. That gesture is itself a high form of praise. The artwork certainly encouraged me to read the books.

We at the Norman Rockwell Museum were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Jerry Pinkney (1939-2021), a true master of American illustration and one of the kindest and most genuine individuals that we have every had the pleasure of working with.

From J.M. Coetzee to Alice Walker, a Book Designer Who Took Risks

I first met Tim Evatt three years ago. Tim greeted me in the cavernous lobby of the main building at Pixar, which is named after Apple Computer’s founder, the late Steve Jobs. We walked through the public hallways of the studio looking at the work of all the artists on staff who had contributed to the film Coco, which was in theaters at the time. We looked at storyboard art, pencil and color studies, set designs, and 3D maquettes. I was like a kid in the candy store. However, equally impressive was learning how much Tim Evatt was and is a true student of “golden age” illustrators like Norman Rockwell, J.C. Leyendecker, and Dean Cornwell. This past week, I decided to capture one of my conversations with Tim in anticipation of a virtual program that the Museum is planning to hold on Wednesday, December 2, 2020 at 7pm.

Food is fundamental to personal, family, community, national and global health. Food is love. Food is culture. Every human is in relationship with food. Cookbook author Alana Chernila and NYU Nutrition and Food Studies professor Amy Bentley have each, in their own way, committed to the study and celebration of food and culture. In their work, in different ways, each invites us to think about the decisions made and comfort created from our own kitchens through paving the way for planetary wellness. And then there is joy. How can intention and care for our food relationships bring joy? Join us for a wide ranging conversation which will leave you with a renewed curiosity to enjoy and celebrate food while also bringing intention and awareness to the choices made each day and how they impact the larger food system.   Illustrator Whitney Sherman has made art for social good and humanistic causes throughout her career and will share how she sees visual imagery creating and shaping our attitudes toward food, health, and the environment.

Despite the growing efficiency of cameras in the nineteenth century, photography on the battlefield was difficult due to long exposures and cumbersome equipment. Because of this, Civil War illustrator reporters like Winslow Homer, Alfred Waud and Edwin Forbes were engaged to capture events that photography at the time could not. In the twentieth century, wartime illustrators remained in demand⸺as skillful practitioners they were able to prioritize in chaotic situations and assemble compelling visual evidence that communicated to viewers in a visceral way.

The 1960s would prove to be the opening of the floodgates of Rockwell’s love and concern for all humanity. After leaving the Post in 1963 he did one of his most famous and important paintings, “The Problem We All Live With”. This symbolized a moment in the life of Ruby Bridges at six years old being escorted by U.S. Marshalls to help end segregation in a school in the South. But it was also a depiction of a moment in the state of America that still resonates to this very day and moment.

In preparing to paint this 1961 Saturday Evening Post cover, Norman Rockwell noted that many countries, cultures, and religions incorporate some version of the Golden Rule into their belief systems. “Do Unto Others as You Would Have Them Do Unto You” is a simple but universal phrase that reflected Rockwell’s personal philosophy.

This fall and winter, the Norman Rockwell Museum takes visitors on a journey through this imaginative tale with the exhibition Gregory Manchess: Above the Timberline. With 30 paintings, as well as props, archival materials, photographs, and behind-the-scenes videos exploring the artist’s process, the exhibition explores the art and ideas that inform this vivid tale. Life-sized sculptures of characters (including polar bears) will also be on display.

A common misconception is the idea that the Victorians invented childhood. Though there were obviously children running around and playing for innumerable generations before the 19th century, the concept of “childhood” was nowhere near as prevalent or as closely observed as it was by the Victorians. Children throughout history were often participating members of the household, assisting with daily chores which were commonly more labor intensive than making the bed or loading the dishwasher, in comparison with today.

Norman Rockwell Museum has announced the release of its new mobile Museum app available as a free download from the iTunes App Store and the Google Play App Store.

As we developed Enduring Ideals: Rockwell, Roosevelt & the Four Freedoms, the one question that kept coming up was “What does freedom mean today?”

That’s why we are kicking-off a new social media campaign called “#FourFreedomsToday.”

All you need to do is express what freedom means to you on social media using the hashtag #FourFreedomsToday, and you could be selected to be featured in our traveling exhibition and on the exhibition website.

We are saddened to learn of the passing of our dear friend and colleague Elaine Gunn. Elaine worked with Norman Rockwell Museum as both gallery guide and school program guide for over 18 years, and served on our Board from 1996 to 2002. She and her family also knew Norman Rockwell personally.
