Norman Rockwell Museum Gets Adventurous During February School Vacation Week, February 18-23
Stockbridge, MA, February 7, 2019—Norman Rockwell Museum will present Adventure Week, a series of drop-in activities for all ages from Monday, February 18 through Saturday, February 23, from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Participants can choose from a variety of events, from art-making and viewing to talks and outdoor activities, inspired by the Museum’s current exhibitions Gregory Manchess: Above the Timberline and Frank E. Schoonover: American Visions. All activities are free for Museum members and children 18 and under, or included with regular Museum admission.
President’s Day Talk
Monday, Feb. 18, 1:30 p.m.
As America’s best-known illustrator, Norman Rockwell was called upon to paint the presidents and presidential candidates of his day—from Eisenhower to Nixon and Kennedy. Discuss the artist’s interactions with the nation’s most prominent leaders during this talk with Curator of Education Tom Daly, who will share little-known stories of Rockwell’s experience capturing their likenesses.
Art of Adventure Gallery Talks

Explore adventure-themed illustrations in the Museum’s galleries. Paintings by Frank Schoonover and Gregory Manchess invite us into worlds beyond the everyday, where anything might happen. Learn about Norman Rockwell’s many adventures, and how they shaped his world view and decisions about what to paint.
Drawing Leopards, Raptors and Bears, oh my!
Monday, February 18 through Friday, February 22, 1 to 4 p.m.
Join Museum educator and illustrator Patrick O’Donnell for a look at drawing animals inspired by the work of Gregory Manchess and Frank E. Schoonover. Learn how to transform shapes and forms into illustrated animals in action. Featured subjects: woolly rhino (Monday), snow leopard (Tuesday), polar bear (Wednesday), wolf (Thursday), and raptor (Friday).
Imagine and Create with Collage
Monday, February 18 through Friday, February 22, 1 to 4 p.m.
Visualize, design and create imaginary animals and habits using collage techniques. Participants will be encouraged to be experiment with color, texture and design, while creating images that suggest adventures about to unfold.
Around the World with Norman
Tuesday, February 19 through Saturday, February 23, 2 p.m.
Join Curator of Education Tom Daly for a look at Norman Rockwell’s global travels, and how these experiences were reflected in his work.
Adventure Story Read Aloud and Conversation
Monday, February 18 through Friday, Feb. 22, 3 p.m.
Unwind with Chief Educator Mary Berle, who will read and discuss celebrated children’s picture books about adventure. For ages 3 through 9, and their families.
Family Adventure Day
Saturday, February 23
Outdoor Adventures with a Wildlife Expert
10 a.m., 11 a.m., and 2 p.m.
Track animals, identify trees and wildlife, and learn where the Housatonic River runs north on a family-friendly, fifty-minute outdoor adventure on the Museum’s 36-acre campus. Led by Pleasant Valley Sanctuary Wildlife Specialist, Max Galdos-Shapiro. Dress for the weather and enjoy some hot cocoa, as you come back inside for further adventures.
Make Adventure Art: Imagine and Create with Collage
12 p.m.
Using collage techniques, visualize, design and create an imaginary animal and the setting it inhabits. Participants will plan and create an image, suggesting fantastical adventures about to unfold.
An Artist’s Adventures: Talk with Gregory Manchess
1 p.m.
Meet artist Gregory Manchess, who will shares stories of personal adventures and how they informed the world he created, illustrated and wrote about for his novel Above The Timberline.
Around the World with Norman
2 p.m.
Join Curator of Education Tom Daly for a look at Norman Rockwell’s global travels, and how these experiences were reflected in his work.
Draw a Manchess Polar Bear
3 p.m.
Learn to draw polar bears with artist Gregory Manchess, and Museum educator and illustrator Patrick O’Donnell. Learn about how Manchess brought polar bears to life in his paintings for Above the Timberline.
Enjoy a cup of hot cocoa throughout the day. Family Adventure Day is free for Museum members and children 18 and under, or included with regular Museum admission.
